Informational meeting regarding Proposed Rezoning of East Decatur Station area

Over the past few years, the City of Decatur has undertaken a review of the current zoning of the area known as East Decatur Station. The City of Decatur proposes the rezoning of the East Decatur Station area from C3 (Heavy Commercial District) to MU (Mixed-Use District). An informal public open house has been scheduled to update property owners within and adjacent to the area.

Mar 17: Touch a Truck (and Train and Bike)

TOUCH A TRUCK

Join Decatur Active Living on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for the annual Touch-a-Truck Event. This fun community event gives children of all ages an opportunity to touch, explore and see their favorite trucks or equipment on wheels.  The City of Decatur and DeKalb County dump trucks, fire trucks, tractors, police cars and motorcycles and many other types of vehicles will be on display. This year we will even have a solar panel display truck!

Ride the train! This year’s Touch a Truck event will be held in the East Lake MARTA station NORTH lot. We encourage visitors to ride the train to the event and make this a family field trip!

Register your bike!  We encourage folks to ride their bike to the event to have it registered by the Decatur Police Department. All those who ride their bike to the event will also receive a special bike pin!

Food Drive! March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign that focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. When you come to Touch-A-Truck, join in the effort by bringing any canned or non-perishable food item. All items will be delivered to DEAM, Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry.

Touch-a-Truck takes place in the East Lake MARTA station NORTH parking lot on DeKalb Avenue. Parking is limited so consider riding the train, walking or biking to the event. The City of Decatur is encouraging citizens to get an up-close and personal look at the city’s budgeting process March 20, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on the Square. (The event will move to the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore Street, in the case of inclement weather.) Find out the “pending spending” planned for the 2019 city budget and how it supports the 2010 Strategic Plan principles developed by Decatur citizens. Talk to representatives from all city departments and play Budget Bingo for fun prizes.

Westchester Battle of the Bands

Tickets are now on sale for the third annual Battle of the Bands fundraising event, which features celebrity judges and local bands that battle it out for the students of Westchester Elementary School. Flock of Eagles, Transmit and Receive, Kickin’ Edgar, The Squirrelheads, and The Benders will compete against each other for bragging rights and the golden wolverine trophy. Atlanta radio personality Yvonne Monet will emcee the event. Celebrity judges include Tammy Dammann, singer, The Dammages; Dr. David Dude, City Schools of Decatur superintendent; Tony Powers, Decatur City Commissioner, Intown Ace Hardware; Mark Trojanowski, drummer, Sister Hazel; and Shani Sammons, board of governors, The Recording Academy (Grammys).
