Jan 13-15: Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project

Saturday, January 13, through Monday, January 15, 2018

Happy New Year! Start the New Year off right by joining City of Decatur employees volunteering at the 16th Annual Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project. Help us make a difference in the lives of Decatur senior citizens by making greatly needed repairs and doing yard work at their homes.

Volunteers may work one or more of the following shifts:

Saturday, January 13: 9am to 1pm and 1pm to 5pm

Sunday, January 14: 1pm to 5pm

Monday, January 15: 9am to 1pm and 1pm to 5pm

Join your coworkers in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his efforts to create a “Beloved Community.”

There are jobs for all skill levels at this home. Please email me or call me at x6548 or 770-652-8593, if you would like to volunteer. Let me know the shift(s) you have selected and whether you have any specific skills. Specific skills are not necessary.

If you would like to help but prefer not to do home repairs or yard work, you can sign up to help with Volunteer Check In. You will check in volunteers and assist them with completing the release form. Shift times for Volunteer Check In are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Monday; 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

We are striving to make this project more environmentally friendly, so please bring a reusable water bottle with you. Since we will have a limited number of tools and work gloves available, it would be extremely helpful to bring supplies with you (work gloves; hammers, saws, drills, and other tools; rakes or other yard work supplies; etc.). Please be certain to mark your tools for easy identification.

Volunteers will meet at the Solarium at the Community Center of South Decatur, 321 W. Hill St. in Oakhurst, at least 30 minutes before the start of their shift.  All volunteers are invited to attend a celebration dinner on Monday, January 15, at 5:00 p.m. at the Solarium. Hope you will be able to make it.

Further information on the Project is available at www.mlkserviceproject.com. Thank you for helping!

Sept 24-25: Urban Coop Tour

Noon-5 p.m. both days

The Oakhurst Community Garden Project and Georgia Organics are teaming up again to present the 4th annual tour of 28 urban coops in:

  • Decatur
  • Grant Park/Ormewood Park
  • Virginia-Highlands/Morningside/Inman Park

Each neighborhood will feature 8+ coops on the self-guided tour. The tour will highlight the benefits of backyard chickens as well as the potential pitfalls and solutions. Coop owners will be available to answer questions and provide details on their coop designs and to share their experiences with “the girls.”

Backyard chickens coops are a fast growing trend in many intown Atlanta neighborhoods with families, community gardens and neighborhood co-ops getting in on the action. The dual benefits of farm fresh eggs as well as the experience of reclaiming ownership of the food chain has inspired hundreds of people to get involved. You can’t get any more local than walking outside your door and gathering eggs . . . and the chickens are also pretty cute.
