Census Data: Decatur Grew 6.5% in Last Decade

We have received some 2010 Census data that we are looking at with respect to growth and demographic changes in the City.

The City’s population grew from 18,077 to 19,237 or approximately 6.5%.  There has been a demographic shift; in 2000, we had a “majority” minority population in Census Tract 227 SW and the south districts combined were “majority” minority districts.  The highest percentage of minority population still resides in the SW district at 37% of the population compared to 68% of the population in 2000.

The City’s election districts do not specifically follow census tract lines and we do not know if we will need to re-district; however, state Representative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield has agreed to assist us by contacting the Legislative Redistricting Office on our behalf.  Additional census information can be found at:
